About The Courier

Tucked inside the historic Hawthorne Building in the heart of downtown Salem, The Courier Hotel is a modern retreat designed for travelers who want to experience the city on their own terms. We offer 21 apartment-style rooms, each thoughtfully outfitted with a full kitchen, in-room coffee station, and comfortable living space, so you can settle in, slow down, and explore Salem the way you actually want to.

Our name speaks to movement and connection, the same spirit that has carried stories through this city for centuries. We've drawn from that history to create a stay that blends the reliability of a hotel with the freedom of a private home. Contactless check-in, intuitive amenities, and quietly considered design mean there's nothing standing between you and the experience you came for.

Whether you're here for Salem's layered history, its thriving food and arts scene, or simply a change of scenery, The Courier is your base. Come and go as you please. No front desk lines, no unnecessary steps, just a comfortable and boutique stay in one of New England's most storied cities.

Our Building's History

  • The Hawthorne Building sits at one of the most storied intersections in downtown Salem, steps from Washington Street's historic commercial corridor.
  • The building takes its name from Salem's most celebrated literary figure, Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was born nearby in 1804 and whose presence still shapes the character of this neighborhood.
  • Washington Street served as the spine of Salem's 19th-century commercial district, and the block at 191-211 has been part of the city's economic life for generations.
  • The building operated for decades as a mixed-use commercial property, housing street-level retail and upper-floor offices that reflected Salem's evolving downtown.
  • In recent years, the building was identified as a candidate for adaptive reuse as part of Salem's broader investment in its historic downtown core.
  • In 2026, the Hawthorne Building opens a new chapter as home to The Courier Hotel, Salem's first apartment-style boutique hotel, designed for travelers who want to experience the city on their own terms.
